The leading automotive wheel rim manufacturer, Steel Strips Wheels Ltd (SSWL), has informed the BSE that it is setting up a new plant for manufacturing truck wheel rims at its existing facility in Chennai. The proposed truck wheel rims plant will have an initial capacity of 0.5 million wheel rims and it is expected to be commissioned by March 2012. The new plant will cater to the requirement of Daimler Chrysler and Ashok Leyland in addition to Tata Motors Ltd. The company is currently negotiating a large contract in the export segment with an undisclosed global OEM. SSWL offers a range of wheel rims for passenger cars, multi-utility vehicles (MUVs), tractors, trucks, off- road vehicles, two-wheelers and three-wheelers. SSW counts auto majors such as Nissan, Suzuki, Tata Motors, General Motors, Audi, BMW and Toyota amongst its customers. It has recently set up a truck wheel rims plant at Jamshedpur. The plant, which caters mainly to Tata Motors, is already running at full capacity due to the strong growth in the commercial vehicle market.
